5 Characteristics of Marketing 2.0 and Why You Should Care

This is a previous post from my blog, www.eggmarketingblog.com

If youre online at all these days, you probably hear a lot about Web 2.0. Marketing 2.0. is the counter to the latest engaging tools of technology. Here are five characteristics of Marketing 2.0:

First, it is interactive. No longer are we forced to sit on the couch and take our daily dose of advertising. We now can jump in the television (or computer) and change the color of the background, choose what pose the personality takes, and tell them how we like to get our messages. More or less.

Take YouTube, for example. What started out as a way for teenagers to post inane videos of skateboarding falls has turned into the single biggest factor affecting media today. Yes, there are still the idiot videos, but now theyre mixed in with product spoofs, commercials that are actually interesting, and now even political debates. What used to be solely for the tech-savvy consumer is now being wooed by major players like CNN.

YouTube works because it is interactive. Once you view a video you can share it with friends. Thats how something like a silly Transformers rap has been viewed over 510,000 times!

Marketing 2.0 is a conversation between consumers and companies. Since we have all but removed commercials from our television viewing repertoire thanks to Tivo, companies have to find new ways to reach their audience. That means they have to ask consumers what they want. Theyre listening for once!

Blogs and forums allow companies to take off their professional mask and get comfortable with their customers. It gives a comfortable, informal voice to the company. Take the Apple Blog. Readers can get updates on Apple products as well as comment on posts. Theyre in essence creating a dialog that hasnt previously been available.

Democracy is what Marketing 2.0 is all about. If the public doesnt like it, it wont float. Or will it? Sometimes there is a public outcry so loud you can hear it from cyberspace. A few months ago, an illegal HD DVD encryption code was posted online. Bloggers found the code and spread it like wildfire, using, among others, Digg as a tool to spread it. The problem? HD DVD is one of Diggs sponsors, so the founder of Digg received a cease and desist order from the company.

The original post was removed, but it was like pulling a leg off a centipede. The code continued to spread. Eventually the founder had to throw his hands up, knowing that democratic media had gotten the best of the situation.

Marketing 2.0 efforts are always non-traditional. There are no rules. This is good in that any business can devise a new method of marketing, but bad because nothing is guaranteed.

Heres an example of Marketing 2.0 gone awry: at the beginning of 2007, Cartoon Network launched a marketing campaign for its show Aqua Teen Hunger Force in Boston. The campaign involved the placement throughout the city of several lightboards with cartoon characters on them. Someone cried terrorism! and the project was shut down. Hard. With police action. The situation might have been an overreaction, but the head of Cartoon Network resigned as a result. Not every idea is a good idea.

Finally, Marketing 2.0 is flexible. If youre used to booking year long phone book ads, this is the complete opposite. Any marketing tool can be changed or stopped relatively easily, and the majority of Marketing 2.0 is affordable (blogs, for example, are free). Creating a strong marketing mix will involve hits and misses, so it is important that you be able to change your marketing plan on a dime.

Now that you understand Marketing 2.0, how will you use it? The longer you take to shift gears from old school marketing to Marketing 2.0, the more customers you will lose as a result. Take the plunge with me into the future of marketing. Trust me, it will be refreshing!

Rastalocks

You've heard about dreadlocks, know they became popular as the fame of singer songwriter Bob Marley grew and have probably even read about their history. But do you know why you should get dreadlocks?

There are many reasons for wearing dreadlocks and looking like one of the stars is one of them. If that's your motivation, you can emulate Lenny Kravitz, Whoopie Goldberg, Rob Zombie, Ani DiFranco, or even the famous Rastafarian Bob Marley himself. There is no doubt that by sporting dreadlocks you'll be making a strong fashion statement. Like the actors, athletes and every day people that have come before you, you're dreadlocks will certainly draw attention.

Perhaps, though, your motivation for dreadlocks is of a spiritual nature. Rastafarians since the 1930's have been wearing dreadlocks to echo their belief system citing the Bible verse Leviticus 21:5: "They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh." Even the term "dreadlocks" is a form of spirituality signifying the "a fear of the Lord". The Sadhus and Sadhvis or Indian holy men and women believed their dreadlocks were sacred and helped them remember that physical appearances were not important. In China, though, dreadlocks were thought to bring good health.

Another reason for wearing dreadlocks is as a form of self and group expression. The Cyber Goth movement in Europe and Ravers in the United States are wearing dreadlock wigs and extensions made with brightly colored fibers. Many people view it as a statement of ethnic pride including people who are honoring their Celtic and Viking ancestry. Dreadlocks have been called a symbol of black unity and power as well as the outward display for environmental activism. Even the rock scene is joining the creative expressionists as artists like Rob Zombie and Mike Borden choose dreadlocks over the former metal mania norm of long hair.

There's one last reason you should get dreadlocks; Freedom. Whether you want to wear your hair down and flowing, bound on the top of your head, pulled back in a rubber band, covered with a shroom hat or even going every which way in a dreadlock version of spikes, you can because with dreadlocks you are not tied to a comb and your style is only limited by your imagination.

So take the plunge and get your killer Rastalocks today.

Pearl Jam Rock Music CD Review

Pearl Jam is the latest Rock CD put out by the extremely group Pearl Jam and they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. Im confident Pearl Jam fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one.

These days its a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

This CD literally grabs your attention right from the very first note with Life Wasted and doesn't let go until the very last note of the very last song Inside Job, which is another great track by the way.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and youve got one of Pearl Jam most impressive releases ever.

Overall Pearl Jam is an outstanding release. Quite possibly Pearl Jam's best to date. Really sensational from beginning to end. If you're even mildly into Rock music you'll enjoy this album.

Im of the opinion that Pearl Jam is certainly some of this groups best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because its a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

Listen to and I think youll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Pearl Jam is clearly a group that is in top form.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 2 - World Wide Suicide, track 5 - Marker In The Sand, and track 10 - Wasted Reprise.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 12 - Army Reserve. Its a great track!

Do You Really Need Surveillance Equipment?

Dangnammit! Thats the third time this month that weve come up missing inventory.

Bob was clearly frustrated. His small electronics business couldnt afford to keep losing money on missing inventory. He knew it had to be one of his employees that was stealing from him, but which one? John had been with him for 6 years, Carrie had been here three years, and Jessie had been here for 6 months without incident.

The answer seemed obvious; Bob had to get one of those Hidden Cameras that he read about on the Internet. His store already had two Security Cameras, but the thief was avoiding them and not showing up on any of the surveillance tapes.

That night, Bob went on line and ordered a hidden camera that was disguised as a wall clock. No one would ever know to avoid this little piece of surveillance equipment because it was an actual working clock with the hidden camera built right in.

A week later when the clock arrived, Bob set it to the correct time, put it on the wall, and waited. It only took two days for him to get his answer. It wasnt an employee at all, it was his own teenage son stealing video recorders and CD players, and selling them to his friends for extra spending money. Bob thought to himself I dont know what that kid is doing with money I pay him for cleaning up around here, but hes going to be working for free for the next six months.

Hidden cameras have become very popular in recent years. Business owners often use surveillance equipment to keep an eye on employees or their store; they can help to protect the business from theft, vandalism, or just for keeping an eye on things. Parents can use nanny cams to make sure their children are being properly treated while theyre away.

Hidden cameras can come wireless or wired. Wireless hidden cameras use batteries for power, and transmit the images to a wireless receiver that can be set up to view what the hidden camera sees from up to mile away or more.

Wired cameras will have a physical wire running from the hidden camera to a Monitor, VCR or PC. The wired cameras are not limited by how long they can record for, but the length of the wires limits them to some degree as to where they can be placed.

To determine if you need a wireless or wired hidden camera, consider the length of time you will need to record. Will the batteries hold up long enough? Hidden cameras come in a variety of shapes and disguises. Choose a camera that goes well with the environment around so it will be unnoticeable. If its easily noticed, it cant really be considered a hidden camera.

There are many types of hidden cameras and surveillance equipment for all types of situations.

Nanny cams are just another name for hidden cameras. Even if you have a nanny that you feel you can trust, it doesn't hurt to have a nanny cam just to be sure that your children and home are safe. Their popularity grows with every news story about an abusive nanny or baby sitter. Hence the name Nanny Cam

The camera might be embedded in children's items such as teddy bears, baby wipe containers, dolls, etc. These items can be placed in the child's room next to other toys. There are also nanny cams for other rooms of the home, including clocks, radios, table lamps, picture frames, mirrors, VCR and DVD players, etc. Every room can have a nanny cam if needed. Just be warned that if your purpose of a hidden camera is to bring out the voyeur in you and spy on someone, you may be breaking a law depending on where you live.

Surveillance systems enable you to observe multiple locations through one localized system. If you need more than a few security cameras, consider a complete surveillance system. With a digital video recording system, your security cameras are set up in different locations and interconnected so you can view all the areas at the same time. You can expand your surveillance system as your business grows. There are also portable DVR surveillance systems for covert operations.

Dummy Cameras look like real security cameras and give an appearance that the area is under surveillance. Dummy cameras are not real security cameras but the thieves won't know if the camera is real or not. Many business owners often use dummy cameras as a deterrent to criminal activity.

Professional cameras are often used to survey large businesses or offices. They can be used inside or outside. Professional cameras can be mounted on wall brackets or ceiling brackets. Some are waterproof for outdoor surveillance, and some are even capable of viewing up to 40 or 50 in almost complete darkness.

Hidden cameras and security cameras are great for protecting your children, home, or business property.

You dont need to be paranoid to see how useful one of these security cameras or surveillance systems can be.
